When your pet has epilepsy

Seizure journal for dogs and cats

Seizures usually happen at home, while your veterinarian sees your dog or cat a few times a year. The journal keeps your observations in one place: when the seizure happened, how long it lasted, what was going on before and how quickly your pet recovered. At the visit you have specific notes instead of memories.
You observe. We organize.

01

Why keep a seizure journal

The full picture, not impressions

Without notes it is hard to say whether things have "been better lately" or only seem that way. A run of entries shows how it really was.

Circumstances in one place

After a few weeks you can easily look back at the situations in which you logged seizures: at night, after stress, after a change of food. What follows from it is for your veterinarian to judge.

Specifics at the visit

Instead of "I think he had three seizures last month", you show dates, durations and notes.

Calm in the chaos

After a seizure it is hard to gather your thoughts. Ready-made fields remind you what is worth writing down once things settle.

02

What to record after each seizure

The "Epilepsy" template in Whispet has these fields. You can change all of them: remove the ones you don't need or add your own.

Duration

How long the seizure lasted, in seconds (up to 10 minutes). If you can, look at a clock — under stress every minute feels longer.

Seizure type

Focal, generalized or cluster. If you are not sure, describe what you saw in the "Symptoms" field.

Intensity

Your own rating on a 1–5 scale.

Lost consciousness

Yes or no.

Phases observed

Pre-ictal, ictal, post-ictal. You can select several.

Symptoms (description)

In your own words, what you saw.

Activity at onset

During sleep, rest, activity or eating.

Recovery time

How many minutes passed before your pet behaved as usual (up to 3 hours).

Triggers

For example stress, weather change, heat, loud sounds, visitors at home, routine change, diet change, missed medication, heat cycle, recent vaccination or veterinary visit. You can select several, or "Unknown".

Seizures in cluster (24h)

An advanced field, for when there were several seizures one after another.

Video recorded

Yes or no, so you remember the recording is in your phone's gallery.

Date and time are saved automatically, and there is room for a note at the end of every entry.

Whispet does not give medical advice. The journal is for recording observations. What to do during a seizure and when to seek urgent help is decided by the veterinarian who looks after your pet — it is worth asking at your next visit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the journal work for cats too?

Yes. The "Epilepsy" template is the same for dogs and cats, and you can adjust the fields to what you observe.

Can I change the template's fields?

Yes. Remove the fields you don't need, add your own and name them your way. If your veterinarian asks you to record something specific, add it as a new field.

How do I pass the journal to my veterinarian?

Export entries or statistics for a chosen date range to PDF or XLSX and send them by email or print them. Export is free. With Premium you can also share your pet with another person, such as your veterinarian, through Shared Care.

What is free and what is Premium?

For free you can browse the templates, create a journal, view entries and statistics, and export your data to PDF and XLSX. Adding entries and Shared Care require Whispet Premium.

Will the journal replace a visit to the veterinarian?

No. The journal helps you gather observations from home. Diagnosis, treatment and recommendations belong to your veterinarian.
