When your pet has diabetes

Diabetes journal for dogs and cats

With diabetes, a lot happens at home every day: readings, insulin, meals, the water bowl. Your veterinarian only sees what you show them. The journal keeps your notes in one place, so at the visit you have specific data instead of memories.
You observe. We organize.

01

Why keep a diabetes journal

Readings with time and context

Every result has its moment and circumstances: before a meal, after a meal, fasting. Without them, the number alone says little.

Insulin and meals side by side

One entry holds the dose and how much your pet ate. You don't have to piece it together from memory later.

Changes that are easy to miss

Drinking, urination, appetite and weight change slowly. A run of entries shows how it really was. What follows from it is for your veterinarian to judge.

Specifics at the visit

Instead of "my pet seems to be drinking more", you show notes from the last few weeks.

02

Two templates: daily notes and a glucose curve

Whispet has two ready-made templates. You can change all the fields: remove the ones you don't need, add your own, and set your own units and ranges for number fields and sliders.

The "Diabetes" template: daily notes

Glucose level

The reading, if you measure at home. In mg/dL or mmol/L: you choose the unit when you create the journal.

Insulin dose

How many units were given.

Insulin type

The list starts empty: you add the insulin your veterinarian prescribed.

Meal context

Before a meal, after a meal, fasting, before the injection or a hypoglycemia check.

Meal amount

Did not eat, half portion, full portion or larger portion.

Appetite level

From "Refused" to "Voracious".

Water intake · Urination

Two separate fields on a five-step scale: water from "Much less" to "Much more", urination from "Much less frequent" to "Much more frequent" than usual.

Urination frequency (per day)

How many times your pet urinated during the day.

Weight

In kilograms.

Symptoms

For example vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, excessive appetite or signs of hypoglycemia. You can select several.

Energy level

Your own rating on a slider.

Activity

None, light, moderate or intense.

Ketones (urine)

An advanced field at the end of the entry, if your veterinarian recommends this test.

The "Glucose Curve" template: a series of readings in one day

When your veterinarian asks for a series of readings at home, each reading is a separate entry.

Glucose level, insulin dose and type

The same as in the "Diabetes" template.

Time since injection

How many hours have passed since the insulin was given.

Measurement context

Pre-injection (T0), before a meal, after a meal or fasting.

Meal (how much eaten)

Did not eat, half portion, full portion or not offered.

State / symptoms

None, weakness, trembling, disorientation, seizures or vomiting. You can select several.

Date and time are saved automatically. To change them, use the "Date & time" section at the very top of the entry. At the end of the entry there is room for notes.

Whispet does not give medical advice. The journal is for recording observations. How often to measure glucose, what dose to give and what to do when a reading or your pet's behavior worries you is decided by the veterinarian who looks after your pet — it is worth asking at your next visit.

How it works in Whispet

Ready-made templates, fully editable

Start from the "Diabetes" or "Glucose Curve" template and adjust the fields to your pet and to your veterinarian's recommendations.

Medication reminders

Add insulin and other medications recommended by your veterinarian to the health records and set reminders.

Charts from your entries

Glucose, insulin dose, weight and energy level on a chart over time, with Min / Avg / Max. For appetite, drinking or symptoms you see how many times you selected each option. Plus a calendar of the days with entries.

Search and date range

Find, for example, all "fasting" readings from the last month.

Export for your veterinarian

Export entries to a PDF that is easy to print or attach to an email, or to XLSX for your own records. Statistics with charts export to PDF too. You choose the date range. Export is free.

Shared Care (Premium)

Share your pet with other people, such as your household or your veterinarian. In full mode they can also see the journal. They can only view it — they cannot change anything or add entries.

Privacy · Your data stays on your device and in your private iCloud. No account needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does the journal work for cats too?

Yes. Both templates are the same for dogs and cats, and you can adjust the fields to what your veterinarian recommends.

Which template should I use: "Diabetes" or "Glucose Curve"?

"Diabetes" is for daily notes: reading, insulin, meal, drinking, wellbeing. "Glucose Curve" is for a series of readings over one day, when your veterinarian asks for one. You can keep both journals.

Which unit do I record glucose in?

In mg/dL or mmol/L. You choose the unit when you create the journal. If you are not sure which one to use, ask your veterinarian or check what your glucose meter shows.

How do I pass the journal to my veterinarian?

Export entries or statistics for a chosen date range to PDF or XLSX and send them by email or print them. Export is free. With Premium you can also share your pet with another person, such as your veterinarian, through Shared Care.

What is free and what is Premium?

For free you can browse the templates, create a journal, view entries and statistics, and export your data to PDF and XLSX. Adding entries and Shared Care require Whispet Premium.

Will the journal replace a visit to the veterinarian?

No. The journal helps you gather observations from home. Diagnosis, treatment and recommendations belong to your veterinarian.
